The Role of Harmony

How does harmony connect with balance? A body out of balance is dissonant. The feeling is antsy—apprehensive. “Something is not right!” On the other hand, a disease may be silently present in the body, and there is no sense of disorder. More common, however, is an unexplainable lack of a consistent internal harmony, which has roots in malaise. With a return to health, the body resonates with the accord of well-being. If we were perfectly attuned to the full harmonic of the body, we might know at the onset when any part is out of balance. It would be possible at such an early stage that simple alternative practices could return the body fully to health. This is an intriguing idea and one we can easily practice without avoiding or ignoring regular medical checkups. Over the years, I’ve learned that when I am overloaded, and not taking particularly good care of myself, a certain muscle in my neck becomes tight. If I override that call to take time off for renewal, my chest becomes congested, and I may be headed toward bronchitis or pneumonia. My most effective strategy has been to stop all the busyness as soon as I become aware of the signal, load up on vitamin C, take a long, hot bath, and catch up on sleep. This platform for renewal gives me an almost tangible sense of harmony. If I’ve cut short my meditation practice, I also return to my cushion without time restraints. To enjoy a practice of silence, free of the mind-crunching activity of concern for the next event or the next responsibility is healing in and of itself.

To detect dissonance in the body does require neutral listening. By that I mean we must not approach an assessment of our state of physical or mental harmony with anxiety, neediness, or heightened emotional attachment. A relaxed conscious awareness brings the most reliable information. Once it is clear that something is amiss in the body, the search for help is appropriate and may require some perseverance. Oprah Winfrey had a sense that she was ill and, according to her colleague and physician Mehmet Oz, had to “push” her doctors to find the illness. Oprah had a major hormonal shutdown with a thyroid condition that was not quickly picked up by regular testing. Dr. Oz praised her and encouraged the millions who watch these shows to hold steady as they search for assistance, saying, “You know your body. Push your doctors.”

TUNE IN TO RESONANCE

Play a bit with simple balance in the physical body. Stand with an easy straight posture with your arms by your sides. Shift your weight back and forth from one foot to the other. Find the place where you feel most comfortable with equal weight on each foot. Consciously offset your balance by either weighting one foot more than the other or by leaning to one side or the other. After each excursion, return to the center place with increasing confidence in your most naturally balanced posture.
